Leading Headlines

Updated: May 22, 2020

Here is your opinion - No reading needed!

A leading headline tells the reader what to think before they even get to the content of the article.

“Unhinged Congressman Interrupts Session”

“Another Misstep by University President”

“Mayor Selflessly and Humbly Leads City’s Recovery”

There is no question where the writer stands on these stories. We don’t even have to start reading the article. The writer clearly has an opinion and the title is meant to sway the reader from the get-go.

If the point of reading news is to educate yourself and form your own opinions, the title should not lead you in one direction or the other.

Leading Headline [lē-diŋ hed-līn]—an article title meant to influence the reader’s opinion before the start.
