Picture Unperfect

Bias Pics

As is true for anyone who gets photographed a lot, there will be great photos and not-so-great photos.

The images that accompany stories give context, but they are often used unfairly to sway the viewer’s/reader’s opinion. Think of any recent president that you liked. Think about how many photos were taken of that individual. In some they will look presidential, and in others they will look like they just smelled something disgusting and have a bad case of indigestion.

Which picture gets chosen to accompany the story of the day? The one that makes him look competent, or the one that makes him look like an idiot? The image used will impact how the entire story gets interpreted by the reader.

Picture unperfect [pik-chər ən-pər-fikt]—using an image to sway the viewer’s opinion before they even read the story.
